Anticoagulation: is there still a role in atherothrombotic stroke?
نویسندگان
چکیده
The title suggests that anticoagulation may no longer have a role in the treatment of atherothrombotic cerebrovascular disease. While evidence from recent studies has not shown a distinct benefit of anticoagulation following acute stroke, the designs of these studies may not have distinguished important differences in stroke types adequately. Before judging anticoagulation, we will review the pathogenesis of atherothrombotic stroke and consider the historical role of anticoagulation in its treatment by analyzing early and recent treatment trials. Although questions remain about timing and duration of treatment, the effectiveness of anticoagulation in preventing recurrent cardiac source cerebral embolism has generally been accepted and therefore will not be discussed.

متن کاملAssociation between Serum Uric Acid Level and Stenosis in Atherothrombotic Infarction
Background: Previous studies show that serum level of uric acid is significantly correlated with mortality and functional outcome in patients with ischemic stroke and according to some other studies, ischemic stroke is associated with stenosis of some stenoisis of somespecific brain vessels. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of hyperuricemia and its associa...

متن کاملConsidering the role of heparin and low-molecular-weight heparins in acute ischemic stroke.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The utility of parenteral anticoagulation therapy in acute ischemic stroke has engendered much controversy and discussion. Recent studies of low-molecular-weight heparins in multiple acute stroke subtypes have not demonstrated improved outcome or reduced recurrence risk. Beneficial treatment effects may occur in subgroups such as patients with large artery atherothromboti...
متن کاملارزیابی سطح سرمی اسید اوریک و ویتامین C در فاز حاد سکتهی مغزی آتروترومبوتیک
Background and Objective: Uric acid and vitamin C take part in protection mechanisms to overcome the oxidative stress that occurs in vascular accidents. Considering the prevalence of cerebrovascular accidents and unresolved position of these antioxidants, this study aimed to assess serum uric acid and vitamin C levels in acute ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 patients durin...
